Abu Dhabi Telemedicine Centre – Convenient Care at the Touch of a Button
Like many countries globally, across the region thousands of patients don’t have easy access to healthcare services, even for the medical guidance on the most common medical conditions. Abu Dhabi Telemedicine Centre provides a patient-centered healthcare delivery model that utilizes technology to break down geographical barriers.
Since launching in October 2014, the Centre has been providing 24/7 access to efficient, high quality medical guidance to eligible patients across the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – over the phone. The Centre and our service is licensed and regulated by Health Authority – Abu Dhabi, and our team of General Practitioners and Registered Nurses are specially trained to conduct remote medical consultations with patients.
Overcoming Barriers to Healthcare Access through Innovation
Abu Dhabi Telemedicine Centre is the first of its kind in the region, with 20 licensed medical professionals on hand to provide expert medical advice on any non-emergency medical condition over the phone, in Arabic and English, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Telemedicine has proven to be a safe and effective form of healthcare delivery, as international medical professionals estimate that that 50% of medical cases can be resolved over the phone, a statistic we have experienced to hold true. Our medical team are specially trained in teleconsultations by our partners – leading Swiss telemedicine provider – Medgate. And our physicians and nurses use the same medical assessment methods as in a clinic, but have been further trained to pick up on key signs, guide patients through simple self-examination techniques, and ask the right questions to diagnose a condition over the phone. During the consultation, patients can also securely share images through our interactive mobile application, TeleMed, to support the diagnosis process.
Our service is also time-efficient and convenient for patients – when they call us, they speak directly to a nurse who conducts triage, and within 30 minutes a doctor will call them back to provide a full medical consultation and guidance on how to manage their condition. Patients can contact our medical team any time of day or night, from anywhere in the UAE or abroad – and through our mobile app’s Quick Call feature, expert medical advice is literally available at the touch of a button.
The Benefits to Our Patients
The Centre has proved convenient for busy working professionals and families across the Emirates – enabling them to receive medical care without deviating from their schedule or having to leave their home or workplace. Currently 85% percent of our callers are UAE nationals, and we are already seeing an increasing volume of women utilizing our services – particularly late at night – when their local healthcare provider may be closed. Since launch we have diagnosed some 1,900 different medical conditions, for tens of thousands of patients. Our top conditions include coughs, colds, fevers, stomach illness, pediatric and travel advice, and common skin problems.
We are grateful for the tremendous support we have received from both our patients and the local regulators – Health Authority Abu Dhabi and the UAE Ministry of Health – and we’re especially proud of our high patient satisfaction rate of 90% and returning patient rate of 30%, which demonstrates that our patients value our service and have adopted telemedicine as an initial mode of care.
